This time the battle between the two giants is for the standardization of the nanoSIM, the next step in the evolution of the SIM cards. The two companies has their own suggestion. Apple relies on the use of mobile SIM card tray, on the other hand Nokia has released their opinion on the topic and they said Apple’s proposal does not satisfy the initial requirements of ETSI, while that of Nokia, RIM and Motorola does.

The Wheat Field

A couple of months back, I noticed that the Google Maps app on my LG Optimus One phone couldn’t zoom in as far as it could before (unless my memory is failing me). Below is the maximum zoom level on the phone

This is not the maximum zoom of the Google Maps android application as my ZTE V9 tablet can zoom in much further as shown below

While you may think that this is a trivial matter, it really rises as a problem when I look for tram stops and street names here in Melbourne. Take a look at the CBD of Melbourne in the screenshot below and see how problematic this is: I can’t see the names of the smaller streets and I have to tap each tram stop in order to see the stop name.

To rub salt into the wound, apps that use a map view can…

Windows 7 AND 64-bit!

Posted: March 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

As a Microsoft Partner, I got advance copies of Windows 7 (the full final version) for my own use.

Needless to say, and based on my own overwhelmingly positive experiences with the pre-release copies, I re-formatted my main work laptop and installed it. I also decided that now was the time to move into the brave new world of 64-bit.

The 64-bit version of Windows does offer some tantilising benefits. It can run faster (when software is written to take advantage of it) and it can also support MUCH more memory (RAM), which produces benefits when running lots of applications at once, or using Virtual Machines – something I do more and more.

The other big advantage of 64-bit Windows is that there is a somewhat higher technical threshold for hardware developers, so it raises the prospect of a future where dodgy hardware drivers cannot cause crashes and Windows will…

Microsoft Anti-Virus arrives

Yesterday, Microsoft released their own Anti-Virus product – ‘Microsoft Security Essentials’.

MSE is a no-frills anti-virus program, that works on Windows XP, Vista and Win7 – and it’s free (the only requirement is that you are running a ‘genuine’ copy of Windows). You can download it from….

www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

Although it’s still quite new – tests seem to indicate it is at least as good at detecting and clearing viruses as the other commercial products on the market, and particular praise has been made of the unobtrusive way it goes about its business. It doesn’t slow your PC down, and it doesn’t bombard you with pop-ups telling you how clever it is. There are no adverts, no upgrade offers, just a small icon in the system tray.

The software updates itself daily via ‘Microsoft Update’, and again does so entirely automatically and invisibly. It’s got a very simple look & feel…

Photoshop CS6 Beta Announced

Posted: March 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

BenMerrick.com/Blog

Finally Photoshop has an automatic back up/recovery system! This has been included in Photoshop CS6, with the Beta free to download today. Here is Engadgets rundown of the features:

It’s been two years since Adobe unveiled a new version of Photoshop, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the company’s engineers have been toiling away behind the scenes on a major update. The outfit’s clearly ready to start showing off the fruits of its labor, though, as it just unveiled the beta version of CS6. All told, the outfit’s added 65 user-feedback-inspired features, including a new crop tool, expanded video editing options, auto recovery and the ability to search for specific layers. Fans of the dotted lines in Illustrator now get the same vector tools in Photoshop. Additionally, every slider for the Camera Raw 7.0 plug-in (exposure, contrast, etc.) has a freshly tweaked algorithm. And for…
